Catalog Note:
In 1894, Artus Van Briggle was given paid leave by Rookwood to study in Paris at the Académie Julian for one year, an arrangement that was renewed in 1895. Van Briggle returned in June of 1896. This drawing has descended in Carrie Steinle’s family and never been offered for sale until now. There is no recorded evidence of any romantic involvement between Van Briggle and Steinle, but this was nevertheless a very nice Christmas present.
