Located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Berry-Hill reigned as one of the foremost galleries of American art until its closing almost a decade ago. The gallery descended from Berry of London, founded in the 17th century, and specialized in 19th and 20th century American art, filling a niche in the market for buyers looking for an alternative to budget-breaking Old Master works or French Impressionist paintings. Berry-Hill also offered works by select modern and contemporary artists from Great Britain. The gallery made a name for itself with genre paintings, Hudson River School works, Modernism, and American Impressionism, but under the direction of James and Frederick Hill, explored emerging trends in collecting and, in the process, brought underrepresented artists to prominence.
